It is important to ensure that sufficient time and focus is dedicated to an investigation as it is a critical part of\u00a0the process. In order for a disciplinary procedure to be\u00a0fair, it\u00a0is a legal requirement that an employer\u00a0carries out a reasonable investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Before you start:<\/p>\n<p>Your essential checklist:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Review all evidence \u2013 if one piece of information leads to the next, follow the trail<\/li>\n<li>Treat all information as strictly confidential \u2013 only talk about the investigation to people who need to know and stress the importance of confidentiality to all people involved in the hearing<\/li>\n<li>Be objective and impartial\u2013 your job is to find and report the facts<\/li>\n<li>Keep an open mind \u2013 don\u2019t assume guilt or innocence<\/li>\n<li>Establish the severity of the issue<\/li>\n<li>Identify all of the evidence that you may need to gather \u2013 decide who you need to interview, and do it before memories fade. Gather files, documents, CCTV footage or ask relevant parties to pull calls or IT records if you need to review them.<\/li>\n<li>Interview anyone who is implicated or who might provide extra information<\/li>\n<li>Make full notes<\/li>\n<li>Do a\u00a0thorough job \u2013 ensure you have accurately represented the situation. For example, don\u2019t just copy a couple of sentences from an email, if the whole email gives a different context.<\/li>\n<li>Write up the investigation in a word document once it has been completed.
